Sijia Luo (羅絲佳)was born in China and currently resides in Japan. She majored in animation at the Film-Video-Animation School of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China and then continued her studies at the Department of Animation in Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media where she will receive her master's degree in 2020. Her creations are now focused on animation and illustration but she occasionally enjoys making music for her own films.
Luo debuted in animation filmmaking complete with sound at age 10 employing MS Paint and Windows Movie Maker. She later encountered her greatest influence -- the filmmaker Norman McLaren -- which directed her to pursue animation at a university. Her experiment in animation style ranges from collage, 2D, 3D,mix with live action, to stop-motion. These endeavors have led her to seek liberation from stereotypical visual language to expression through animated movement, scene structures and music.
Her graduation film “So Red and A Little Blue” (2015) has been screened at film festivals around the world including Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Melbourne International Animation Festival, Holland Animation Film Festival and Countryside Animafest Cyprus. Luo's other works include a music video for the band Wutiaoren and promotional videos for China's largest video website Youku and the Art Path 2017 exhibition at the Department of Musical Creativity and the Environment, Tokyo University of the Arts.
Luo’s latest film “Time Autobahn” was completed as her master’s first-year project in 2018.
